Independence Day is officially today, but the celebration here was late yesterday afternoon.  At four o’clock there was a short civic activity at the school which was followed by Pin the Seal on the poster.  Food could be bought at the small room where the local women meet.  They offered tamales, rice with pork, cookies, and either coffee or sweet water.  We shared the food which was our supper.

Preparation for the dances and some lanterns for the parade.

In the community salon the elementary students performed typical dances and then presented their faroles, handmade lanterns, to the judges before parading around the circular road in the dark.  The dancing consisted of the girls basically swishing their skirts and the boys waving a bandana.  The audience was proud and supportive.

Here is a five minute video of the events.
